Marshall and Hugh were still talking business as they went to the dining room. An overseas conglomerate was divesting itself of some assets, and Marshall was still in the process of evaluating them as possible acquisitions. It was a lot of information to process. Hugh was invaluable when it came to supplying facts and figures, and Marshall stayed remarkably focused considering that any minute now his two favorite people would be joining them.
Just as lunch was about to be served, Tessa made an appearance looking happy and adorable in Cody's arms.
"What a little beauty," Hugh said on seeing her. "Your pictures don't do you justice, little lady."
"See, he's a good guy," Marshall said to Cody while Hugh came up to admire the cuteness that was Tessa. She babbled at him a little then made a grab for his glasses. Hugh wasn't ready for her attack, and his glasses got snatched away.
"I guess your glasses aren't safe from her," Cody said while he tried to get them back from that tiny, iron grip of hers.
"They are her glasses now. I'll buy you a new pair, Hugh," Marshall told him with a shrug.
"Actually they are pointy and not safe for her to play with," Cody said to him as he took the glasses away from Tessa and gave them back to Hugh. "Even if something isn't sharp, but it's long and narrow, it's dangerous to her."
"Right, sorry," Hugh said.
Cody was ready to let him off the hook. "Don't worry. I don't expect you to know." Marshall wasn't so lucky. "But I do expect Marshall to know," Cody said more sharply as he turned to him. It was weird to think that Cody was shy and very reserved around people. It was only when it came to Tessa that he turned into a tiger.
"I'm still learning," Marshall said. "I don't take her safety for granted, I promise. Can I hold her while we eat?"
"Sure, but I know you. You'll just play with her and not get any eating done," Cody told him as he handed her over and warned him, "Don't let her get her hands on any utensils."
"Yes, sir," Marshall said as he sat down with Tessa. As he got busy with her antics, Cody got a chance to question Hugh.
"Is it weird having Marshall as your friend and your boss?"
Hugh gave him a look like he thought the question was ironic. "I've worked for him since he took over the family business so I'm used to it. Or I was until this new side of him came to light."
"You mean because of Tessa?" Cody asked.
"Mostly," Hugh said with a sly smile. "I'm happy for him though. We just have to streamline this new normal. I'll have to go back and forth a few times this week. A side effect of Marshall working from home more."
"Is it a problem?" Cody asked.
Hugh shook his head. "Not at all. I get treated to Marta's cooking and it's good for Marshall. He and the little
